Development Log 3 (7-13 Nov)

Week 3 has come and gone for the development of Primed State! Honestly, time is passing very quickly on this project, but luckily we are keeping progress with our milestones on what to accomplish.

Art

Finn has coloured our player character, and does he look good! Finn then also began work on the level assets using the concept art from Emily for the first room in the game.

The rig for the enemy was completed by Hazel, and she is now moving onto animating the walk cycle. As a break from the enemy model, though, she also pumped out some level assets real fast.

Polina has been texturing her assets as well as developing a few more visual effects. These include the EMP, enemy projectile and magnet when it is turned on.

Emily has done a blockout of room 2 and some of the more common repeatable assets that we will use for set dressing the rooms going forwards.

Programming

We had to have our movement overhauled due to a few interaction bugs. So Lachlan spent some time redoing it! The player will not accelerate when jumping as much and will slide down walls, being the most notable changes.

The EMP is now functional! Thanks to wizardry by Andrew and several moments of him having to pull his hair out. He also made the main menu and got a working options slider!

Gary's big focus was ensuring our sounds will play at appropriate times. He intends to tie the sounds to animations in the next week. There was a small period of time where the placeholder sounds were animals too.

Design

Sonya and Michael were working with Gary for the sounds. They have been scouring the internet for only the highest quality of sounds to bring our game to life, as well as editing them as needed.

Aruna had been doing play testing, wanting to ensure that our game’s progress is natural and that the rooms were teaching the player the skills needed to overcome the game’s obstacles; she also progressed the narrative design further.

I’m sure that Luke is sick of the Level Design Document by now, however, it is an important document. He has been giving the initial room drawings some scale and adjusting as needed during his own playtesting.

Finally, I have been finishing the initial first pass greybox of the final rooms. We also presented our game at the local Canberra game dev meetup, Pizza and Pixels. Several good pieces of feedback were given that we are now working to implement.

While we have been smashing this project we still have along way to go, but we are cruising! Make sure to come back next week to see the progress!
